Chicago Public Schools is no longer coordinating student mentoring services through Mentoring the Next Generation.

If you are interested in participating in a mentoring program, please visit www.onegooddeedchicago.org or www.ilmentoring.org to register as a mentor via the Mayor’s Mentoring Challenge. Announced on August 14 by Mayor Emanuel and the Illinois Mentoring Partnership, the Mayor's Mentoring Challenge seeks to identify 1,000 new mentors over two years to serve Chicago's youth. Interested adults will be referred to organizations based on their skills and preferences.

The preceding is the Vision Statement for the new CPS Strategic Action Plan entitled Chicago's Children: The Next Generation. It is with this vision in mind that CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett has issued an invitation to all CPS Central Office and non-building employees to serve as mentors in a District-wide volunteer initiative titled Mentoring the Next Generation. This year, we will begin this important work by providing mentors for students in Kindergarten and Grade 8. All Central Office, Network and non-building employees are eligible to serve as volunteer mentors. These will be the first ambassadors in what we envision will become a citywide initiative - Mentoring the Next Generation.

After you register, go to CPS University to sign up for mentor training.

How to sign up for Mentoring the Next Generation training

Go to CPS University to sign up for a training session.

cps.edu/CPSUniversity

Login using your CPS username and password.



After the login screen, you will see the "My Learning" landing page.



Type "Next Generation Mentor" in the search the catalog text box and press the "Search" button.



You will see training course options available by mentor type. Select the course to see available sessions.



Review training dates and times available. Click "Enroll" button to sign up for a session. Note: Click "View Details" to see exact room location.



Once enrolled, you are ready to attend your training session. Be sure to arrive 10-15 minutes before your training session begins.

Once you complete your training session, you will be assigned to mentor at a CPS elementary school.

Complete a Volunteer Fingerprint Background Investigation

Instructions: Fill out the attached forms and bring with you to one of the sites listed. Please complete as soon as possible as it may take up to 30 days for us to receive results.

Once your background check results are received, you will receive a mentor registration packet and information on how to sign up for the required training session.
