CHICAGO – Chicago Public Schools (CPS) announced today that it will host a series of Back-to-School kickoff events throughout the city this month to help students and families prepare for a successful year ahead. The first day of school for all CPS students is Tuesday, September 6, and CPS is launching a series of new events and resources to support families in ensuring students are in class and ready to learn on day one.
“This Back to School season, we are reminding students and parents to mark their calendars for September 6th and every school day thereafter, because strong attendance is necessary for success in the classroom,” said Mayor Rahm Emanuel. “Throughout the summer, we have provided thousands of opportunities around the city for students to prevent the summer slide and remain engaged in learning so that from day one, they will be better prepared to start the school year strong and to continue making academic gains this school year.”

Each Back to School season, CPS and its partners conduct an aggressive outreach strategy to help parents and families across the city prepare for the upcoming school year, with information on school resources available to their child, enrollment steps to take, and most importantly, reminding them of the importance of a strong attendance record throughout the school year.

“Our dedicated students and staff have made outstanding academic gains in recent years, and the entire CPS family is motivated to kick off a new, successful school year,” said CPS CEO Forrest Claypool. “Back-to-School events will provide families with helpful resources and activities to prepare for a productive school year that builds on our record-setting graduation rates, test scores, attendance and college enrollment.”

To help students fully prepare for the new school year, CPS will host events for each school network in the district. At the events, students will receive school supplies, meet new classmates, reconnect with friends, and earn a CPS Connects digital Back-to-School Badge. Thanks to partnerships and sponsors, all Back-to-School celebrations will include food provided by Aramark, music from iHeartRadio DJs, and access to immunizations, courtesy of Walgreens pharmacists. CPS staff and volunteers will be available to help answer questions regarding the upcoming school year, and transportation will be available to and from events through shuttle service.

“Research shows that students who attend school on the first day will have better overall attendance and higher academic achievement,” said CPS Chief Education Officer Dr. Janice K. Jackson. “By bringing our school communities together prior to the first day of school, we hope to provide families with the resources and supports they need to start the year strong on day one.”

In addition to kickoff events throughout the city, CPS has created a comprehensive Back-to-School website (www.cps.edu/b2s) with resources including frequently asked questions, enrollment procedures, medical forms, health requirements and more. The Back-to-School website also contains information on critical resources like Parent Portal, which allows parents to track the grades and attendance of their children throughout the school year. Families can also explore CTE, dual enrollment and other CPS programs that may help students align their interests with their academic experience.

For information on specific schools, families can visit www.cps.edu/schools to access school profile pages and find schools in their neighborhood. Families can view profile pages to explore information on school size, type, hours, academic and extracurricular programs, and achievement.

Families with children between the ages of 3 and 5 can visit the Chicago Early Learning Portal (www.cps.edu/readytolearn) to explore school and community-based early childhood programs that will best meet their needs. Parents can also call the Chicago: Ready to Learn! Hotline at (312) 229-1690 for one-on-one assistance.

For any additional questions regarding Back-to-School, parents may email b2s@cps.edu or call 773-553-1580.
