Statement by Interim CEO Terry Mazany on IG findings

January 4, 2011

The Office of the Inspector General is created by law and is charged with the duty to investigate allegations of fraud, waste and mismanagement in the Chicago Public Schools.  We welcome the work of this office to help ensure that public funds are used appropriately and that our policies are adhered to.

These findings are serious and have prompted a thorough review of the District’s management policies and practices.   Many controls and corrective actions have already been implemented and we continue to institute improved systems of accountability.

Public trust of district leadership is paramount and we must prioritize the needs of students first.  This report sends a strong message to those who do otherwise.  I will use this information to hold accountable those who are not working in the best interests of our students and the wise expenditure of public funds.
