City of Chicago residents will have to dial a few extra numbers when they make telephone calls beginning this weekend.

The Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) will unveil a new area code for the Chicago area starting Nov. 7, 2009.

872, the new area code, will overlay the 773 and 312 area codes, serving all parts of the city. The ICC said this 11-digit dialing system is being introduced to “ensure a continuing supply of telephone numbers and competitive services” throughout the city.

Dialing 7-digits versus 11-digits

So what does this new area code mean to you? For starters, you will have to dial 11 numbers for any call you make within the City of Chicago. You will also no longer be able to dial 7-digits to a local number inside your area code. Here’s the new way to call: 1 + area code + 7-digit telephone number.

Telephone numbers won’t change. The 872 area code will be assigned only for new telephone numbers. Long distance rates, and dialing 911 and 311 will not change.

Tips for using the new 11-digit system

There are several everyday household items that may need to updated to incorporate our new 11-digit dialing system.

• Reprogram all modems, faxes, or phones to dial 11 digits.
• Add your area code to all websites, stationery, advertising materials, business cards and/or checks.
• Update all stored local telephone numbers to include the area code.
