Community Meeting Notes and Transcripts
Presentations at Community Meetings
As CPS works to address the District's utilization crisis, a crucial part of this process is engaging the community in a transparent and respectful way. To ensure that school communities are active participants in this process and that their voices are heard, CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett launched a second round of community engagement beginning January 28. A total of 28 community meetings are being held throughout the city, with two in every Network. The first round of meetings will provide high-level information about schools in each Network and collect feedback from communities to share with the CEO. The second round of meetings will allow all communities to provide feedback on specific schools in their Network that remain on the table for consideration in addressing the District's utilization crisis. CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett Response to Commission on School Utilization Report
CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett announced in her formal response to the Commission on School Utilization that high schools and Level 1 high-performing schools will not be considered as part of the District's efforts to address its utilization crisis, except in rare cases where a school may pose a life/safety threat to students and staff. These were among several recommendations embraced by CEO Byrd-Bennett after she reviewed the report issued Jan. 10 by the Commission, which she formed to evaluate the District's utilization challenges and engage the community around this issue.

CPS Space Utilization
CPS Space Utilization Standards clearly define what is adequate teaching and learning space within all of the school facilities it operates. These standards will help to ensure that all students have equal access to a learning environment that effectively supports strong instructional programs.

Independent Hearing Officers
Before CPS may close, consolidate, reassign students via a boundary change, phase-out or co-locate a school, the public has the opportunity to provide comment at hearings conducted by independent hearing officers, who are licensed attorneys in Illinois. After the hearings, hearing officers will issue a written summary of the testimony provided as well as their findings of CPS' compliance with 105 ILCS 5/34-230, the state law that governs school action processes, to CPS CEO Barbara Byrd-Bennett.
