On behalf of the Chicago Board of Education, the Chief Executive Office implements sound business practices and education policies that maximize student academic performance. The Chief Executive Office recruits, develops and supports high quality teachers and school leaders. The end result includes providing a positive work environment for all Chicago Public Schools (CPS) employees. The following 12 units report directly to the Chief Executive Office:

Current Initiatives

The current initiatives of the Chief Executive Office serve students from every grade level and provides context to the direction of the entire Chicago Public Schools system. Some of the many initiatives that are implemented by the 12 units under the Chief Executive Office include:

  • Reading Initiative
  • Math and Science Initiative
  • High School Transformation
  • Freshman Connection
  • Graduation Pathways


  • Increased ISAT scores at the elementary school level and ACT scores at the high school level
  • Increased the number of CPS graduates enrolling in college
  • Expansion of the High School Transformation from 11 to 25 schools, providing greater rigor and enhanced teacher training to transform more neighborhood high schools into schools of choice
  • Successful negotiations on new contracts with our labor unions, which guarantees 25 straight years of labor peace in the Chicago Public Schools
  • Hosted the “Shout-Out for Schools” rally in Soldier Field – 30,000 students rally for safety and funding for education
